What is ROT/RUT deduction and how can I use it?
In Sweden, RUT and ROT deductions are tax incentives that can benefit clients of a handyman and cleaning company. These deductions are designed to encourage homeowners to use professional services for household work and maintenance, ultimately reducing the informal or “black market” labor economy. Here’s an explanation of RUT and ROT deductions:
RUT Deduction
What is RUT Deduction?
RUT (Rengöring, Underhåll, Tvätt) is a tax deduction specifically aimed at household services such as cleaning, laundry, and basic maintenance.
How Does It Work?
When you hire a professional cleaning company or other household service providers that are eligible for RUT deductions, the invoice issuer claim a deduction in your name on due amout based on a 30% of the labor costs.
Eligible Services
RUT deductions typically cover cleaning, window washing, gardening, childcare, and other similar household services.
Benefits for Clients
Clients benefit by saving money on essential household services, making it more affordable to hire professionals for tasks like cleaning, which can lead to better quality results and safer working conditions.
ROT Deduction
What is ROT Deduction?
ROT (Reparation, Ombyggnad, Tillbyggnad) is a tax deduction aimed at home repairs, renovations, and improvements.
How Does It Work?
When you hire a handyman or construction company for renovation or repair work on your home, the invoice issuer claim in your name a deduction on due amout based on a 50% of the labor costs.
Eligible Services
ROT deductions cover a wide range of services related to home improvement, including renovations, construction, plumbing, electrical work, and more.
Benefits for Clients
Clients benefit from the ROT deduction by reducing the overall cost of home improvements and repairs. It encourages homeowners to invest in the maintenance and enhancement of their properties.
Residents of Sweden can benefit from SEK 75,000 per person per year. The ROT deduction is a maximum of SEK 50,000 per person per year. In total, a private person can receive SEK 75,000 in ROT and RUT deductions per year. In the case of services covered by the ROT deduction, the service recipient must also be the owner of the property to which the service relates.
Both RUT and ROT deductions are designed to promote the use of professional services in the household and construction sectors, contributing to the formal economy and ensuring that work is performed safely and in compliance with regulations. The specific rules and deduction percentages may change from year to year, so it’s advisable to check with the Swedish Tax Agency or a tax advisor for the most up-to-date information.
